Warahmmer Fantasy Battles - Chaos Warriors Legions of Slaanesh

Part 3 of my Warhammer Fantasy series: The Legions of Slaanesh.  I created these guys in response to my Khorne legion.  Using the old 3rd edition Slaves to Darkness book both armies incorporated interesting units from 3rd edition, including Demons.  They were designed to fight each other in the Chaos Wastes using the rules from that old tome.  Battles were epic in power and scope.   


If Khorne is my hammer, then Slaanesh is my scalpel.  When I want to kill in style I call upon the Dark Prince.  This army is a garish mishmash of color.  Pinks, blues & blacks.  While this army does not have the brute strength of Khorne they laughed at fear causing foes, gladly fighting to the death while simultaneously enjoying the how the spray of their own blood formed pleasing patterns on the battlefield.

Part Two of my Warhammer Fantasy Collection: The Legions of Khorne.

When significant force is needed on the battlefield I usually go to my Khorne toolbox.  Unfortunately, all he has is hammers.  There is nothing subtle about this force.  Much of it was built for Warhammer 3rd edition I mind, with Chaos Dwarf Bazooka teams!

When faced with my local foes back in the day,  Elves and Dwarves, I found the best solution to magic and gunfire was to simply not worry about it and bury my axe in their heads.

It usually worked.

I normally don't assemble all my miniatures for a particular force in one place very often. My Undead forces at the largest single army that I still have left for Fantasy.  500+ strong.  Took years to assemble and paint.

15mm Sci Fi - Alternative Armies Rad Zombies

Every Sci-Fi game needs zombies.  It is a must.  For my 15mm far future battlefield I found Alternative Armies Rad Zombies were a perfect fir for my needs.

Each pack comes with five models in five poses.  There was considerable flash to clean up on each figure, taking a few minutes each.  This is typical of models which have thinner limbs, regardless of the manufacturer.  The models are comparable size with GZG figures.

Painting these monstrosities was very simple: I decided on a base coat of Tamiya Grey Green, which looks like sickly greenish skin (good for aliens too).  I then used a series of GW washes to tint the green to various shades: sepia, flesh shade, green, athonian camoshade and drakenhof blue (which is perfect for a waterlogged corpse).  This gave an excellent zombie appearance for a horde without becoming redundant.

I then applied Reaper blood via a wetbrush to various areas randomly and picked out various raw bone areas with Reaper Graveyard bone.  I wash of Delvan Mud was then applied across all figures as well as Army Painter Red Wash to various random areas.  Once this was dry I added some final blood and bone highlights along with a light dry brush of Vallejo Dead Flesh to random areas.

At 1:100 scale highlights need to be bold, no subtle bending here.  High contrast is needed for any details to show beyond a foot or so.  As usual, my photography makes the actual product look like crap.  I NEED to make a lightbox or something for taking proper photos.

Again, I am not disappointed by these figures from Alternative Armies.  They have a very distinct Fallout theme which I love.  They fit perfectly into my Alien Squad Leader forces as either Thralls for Enslaver armies or as Beasts for any number of factions which can field them.

15mm Sci Fi - Alternative Armies Laserburn Demonic Warriors

Alternative Armies never fails to provide me with interesting things to paint.  Behold: Demonic Warriors, from the 15mm Laserburn range.  When I saw these guys I knew I needed to paint them.  They are big, furry and look both playful and mean. 

The color patterns for these guys needed to be vibrant - fitting for their whimsical feel.  So I used a method that is especially fast and effective: inking.  To start off with I gave each model a coat of Tamiya Flat White.  I then used a series of Games Work Shop washes to create the color patterns.  Washes were sometimes applied over each other and blended to create different effects.  Each model took perhaps 15 minutes to paint from start to finish.

The big four legged furball was especially fun to paint.  He looks like he is dancing just before he makes a meal of you.

The green demon did not come with bad breath.  I added that myself by drilling a small hole in the rather large smiling mouth, adding a small paperclip and some cotten that I sprayed in a flame pattern.  His nose is quite large so I imagine he sneezes a lot with dangerous results.

The fat demon on the left reminds me of an old demonic monster from 1st edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons.

Size comparison.  The demons are larger than man sized and well nourished.  I always base models singly; in games which use group basing, such as Alien Squad Leader, I use white tac to attach them to the base.

Again, Alternative Armies has a fantastic model range with a definite old school feel.  These can be used in Alien Squad Leader as either Beasts or Winged Flyers, or for smaller sci fi skirmish games.
